To get the flat abs that you always wanted, you must do certain types of exercises that target that specific muscle group. The abdominal muscles group, often called THE CORE, consists of 4 different muscles that provide movement and support to the body. The 6 pack abs effect you get from the rectus abdominus muscle, which the long muscle along the front of your stomach.

The abs muscle group consists of: lower and upper abs (called rectus abdominis), obliques (internal and external obliques), and transverse abdominal muscle (the deepest muscle which extends from the rips to the hips).
