Best Liquids For Dehydration

Everyone loses water every day through many ways including sweat, tears, urine and breathing. This is why we drink plenty of water to replace the lost fluids. In the other Bukisa article, Best Liquids for Hydration, we learned some good facts about the importance of water, juice, fruits and vegetables. These help refresh our body system with the liquids we need. On the other hand, there are other liquids that dont do the job which people think they do. This job is hydrating the body and the following article describes a range of liquids which are either weak or do nothing to hydrate the body. So you should avoid these if the primary option is to hydrate the body without drinking water. Let us first look at some basic information regarding dehydration including how children lose water, signs to recognise dehydration and how to prevent it again.

Kids Lose Lots of Water

Children can lose a lot of water at home. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea are a few ways that are the causes. Other children play outdoors, go to school and dont even choose to drink water and rely on other liquids like soft drinks and milk. They dont know that their body is screaming for the correct source. Thus, they become dehydrated.

How to Recognise Dehydration

Many signs are visible when your child is dehydrated. Some of these include:

Dry mouth

Crying with little or no tears

Eyes that seem to look sunken into the head

Dry skin

Not visiting the toilet in several hours

Dark coloured urine

Dizziness

How to Prevent Dehydration

The best way to prevent dehydration is to persuade your children to drink plenty of water throughout the day. They might be studying P.E on a certain day and would require extra fluids in their lunchboxes. If they are on free school dinners, make sure you remind them to drink enough water or juice before physical lessons take place. But also warn them not to drink over the limit which would trigger the bathroom signal during lessons. Teachers hate this the most and would not look good on your childs report.

How Water can help Children Concentrate

Allowing children to drink water every few hours would help prevent dehydration and would help them concentrate on their school work. Parents dont realise that water is such a blessing and could help in their childrens study. Maintaining a hydrated brain is looked upon as a high learning factor. We know that the brain is made of 80% water and a slight dehydration could cause your child to lose near 10% of his concentration. By maintaining a hydrated mind and body, your child can stay alert in the classroom for longer and find school work easier.

Best liquids for Dehydration

1) Coffee and Tea

An experiment showed that caffeine doesnt make a person lose more urine which could mean that caffeine does not dehydrate the body. But this experiment does not draw any conclusions about the actual mystery. Losing even a little amount of water from cells could soon result to chronic cell dehydration.

The study regarding coffee and the likelihood of becoming dehydrated is unfounded. Instead, coffee is a diuretic stimulant which increases the use of the restroom. However, those who are regular coffee drinkers wouldnt need to worry about the frequent use of the bathroom because of their coffee tolerance. To find out more about coffees health benefits, please check my Bukisa article 'health benefits of coffee'.

2) Milk

An interesting study in the UK was undertaken where skimmed milk was used to hydrate the body. Results had showed that skimmed milk may have been absorbed better than any other liquid. The presence of potassium and sodium in skimmed milk is what could cause the effectiveness of milk and body hydration. Not only does skimmed milk help hydrate the body, but it also provides good energy, proteins, vitamins and minerals for those who spend countless hours on exercise in their lifetime. Despite skimmed milk, whole milk is filled with too much fat content and would not help hydrate the body.

Conclusion

Long hours of dehydration will eventually cause life threatening problems to your health. It is important to keep yourself and your family hydrated well with water, fruit juices, fruits and vegetables.
