Do Crash Diets Work?

When we want to lose weight we nearly always want to do it quickly. We have got tired of our reflection in the mirror, or of not fitting into our clothes, and thus we search around for the quickest solution and then start to ask ourselves, do crash diets work?

In essence any diet will work if you can adhere to all the rules and regulations and if you stay with it long enough. This however is where most crash diets fail. A crash diet is by its very nature highly restrictive, both in terms of the foods that you can eat whilst you are on it, and in the number of calories, let alone nutrients, it provides your body with. Whereas you might be able to stick to whatever bizarre concoction the crash diet provides you with for a couple of days, any longer than this and you are going to be driven by hunger to the cookie jar.

Because crash diets are both extremely low in calories and in nutrients, they can also cause the body to think that it is going to go into starvation mode and thus your metabolism will slow down in order to conserve every last iota of energy. This is bad news for you if you are trying to lose weight, as you will find that with the drop in your metabolism there will follow a drop in the number of pounds you are losing.

Your best path to weight loss then is to follow a varied, healthy diet plan, which stimulates your metabolism and provides you with enough energy to function. Do crash diets work? The answer is yes, for the couple of days that you are able to stick with them, but as anyone knows you can't lose much weight in a couple of days.
